March 8 is marked as International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world.

The Australian Tunnelling Society is committed to raising awareness, promoting discussion and encouraging action as part of its diversity strategy. The International Women’s Day celebrations provide the perfect platform to engage with the tunnelling and construction industry and promote healthy discussion about what positive action can be taken to address the challenges facing modern women in the workforce.

Through industry and your support for these initiatives, we can help keep the message of diversity prevalent.

To recognise the contribution of women in our workplace the ATS has established the Woman in Tunnelling High Achiever Award which will be awarded to a woman who has stood out in this sector for their technical excellence and industry leadership in their chosen field (for example tunnel design, construction or research) and are active in industry involvement including promoting the role of women in the industry through role modelling, mentoring and/or advocacy to attract and retain women and girls in the field of tunnelling.

The award will be presented at the Australasian Tunnel Conference  in Melbourne 10 -13th May 2021.
