The West Gate Tunnel Project will provide an alternative river crossing to the West Gate Bridge. The key components of the Project include the widening of the West Gate Freeway, a tunnel under Yarraville and an elevated motorway that connects the West Gate Freeway with the Port of Melbourne, CityLink, and the Melbourne central city.

Trevor has over 15 years of experience in geotechnical engineering in a wide range of projects. He has been involved in a number major tunnelling projects situated in Melbourne’s complex geology, including West Gate Tunnel, Melbourne Metro, East West Link and Melbourne Main Sewer.

For the West Gate Tunnel Project, Trevor acted as an advisor to Transurban supporting concept through to reference design stages of the project. He continues to remain involved during the current construction phase of this important project.

The tunnelling component of the project will pass through variable sedimentary and igneous deposits of the Cainozoic (Quaternary & Tertiary) era. These deposits reflect the complex geological and geomorphological processes that have shaped the region, including tectonic movements and development of “palaeo-valley” structures.

This presentation will discuss the early development of a ground model for the area based on pre-construction geotechnical studies.
