Road Tunnel to be built under Footscray PDF Print E-mail
Victoria State Government has confirmed a $2.5 billion road tunnel will be built beneath Footscray - but the details will not be known for years . At the launch of the Government’s $38 billion 12-year transport plan, Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas said the tunnel’s route and entry points had not been decided and would be subject to consultation. The Victorian Transport Plan also includes routes to remove truck traffic from residential streets, and a $4.5 billion rail tunnel from Footscray to St Kilda Rd.
The road tunnel is likely to link Dynon and Footscray roads in the port precinct to Geelong and Sunshine roads in West Footscray.
Mr Pallas confirmed homes would be acquired in West Footscray, Community consultation and design work would take until at least 2011 which will determine the design of the tunnel access on the Maribyrnong River crossing.
The transport blueprint also includes a Truck Action Plan, as recommended by Sir Rod Eddington, including a new link from the West Gate Freeway into the Port of Melbourne via Hyde St.
