Recently, the ATS was requested to make comment on the draft units of competency, being prepared by Artibus Innovation, who are preparing these on behalf of their client, The Construction, Plumbing and Services Industry Reference Committee.

The opportunity to make comment is here, comments close on 8 September.  As they currently exist, these units of competency apply mainly to domestic construction.

Domestic construction has recently overtaken tunnelling as the main cause of silicosis in Australia.  This is mainly due to the belated recognition of the effects of dry cutting in the manufactured stone industry.  Refer to this document to understand how this has occurred.

Nevertheless, tunnelling remains a leading cause of concern.  Extracted from the report above is this table (from Table 8):

Silicosis remains a significant risk for workers in our industry.

NSW Air Quality Working Group, hosted on the ATS website, contains important resources for awareness, understanding and good practice.  Please refer to these papers.
